Neu(burger)auspflanzung – about the new Neuburger

 In Weine

After a break of planting in 2021 we started a new vineyard project this year. Besides the Blaufränkisch on its favourite place, the Gritschenberg, we also chose to plant an often-underestimated grape variety which has a high standing at the winery: Neuburger.

We found the perfect spot for our new Neuburger vineyard fast. The Buschenberg is a steep north-facing slope on the backside of the Jungenberg, that means it is facing the Leithagebirge. The special thing about the vineyard is the pure schist soil which you can even see on the surface.

Before the planting machine is coming every new vineyard has to be prepared so that the planting is easier. Usually, you turn the whole vineyard soil upside down for at least one time, which means a huge intervention into the soil life. Therefore, we decided to only loosen the space where the vines are going to be planted so that we don’t have to disturb the biodiversity of the vineyard too much.

Then it is finally time to get the baby vines into the soil. Our vines are coming from a befriended vine school in Neckenmarkt called Reben Iby. This time our vines are planted by the chef and senior chef personally. The one or the other vine did have some problem to find itself a good space in the schist stone rich soil but in the end everyone did it and now we are waiting for a lot of rain so that the baby vines do not die of thirst.

Apropos thirst: The first grapes of the new vineyards can be harvested in three years. Until then there is a lot of work to put into getting the little vines healthy and strong.
