Wilde Karotte Welschriesling - About the wine of Katrin Lautner

In this blog entry we won´t just present you the wine, but also one of our valuable employee.

Katrin Lautner is working with us since vintage 2017. With her expertise for mash-fermented white wines and her interest to biodynamic viti- and horticulture she fits perfectly to our winery.

The talented BOKU graduate started with an internship and continued as half-time employee besides her master course at the FH Burgenland and the WSET at the Weinakademie. During this time, she played an important role as my right as well as my left hand and tributed a lot to the development of the winery.

In 2019 she did not just operate as cellar master, but she also made her first own wine.

The grapes come from a vineyard at the Tannenberg from the vineyard Buschenberg, which is the backside of the Jungenberg. It faces northwest and is made of crystalline primary rock (=schist) with scattered quartzite and limestone, which make the vineyard so special. The variety of the grape is the autochthon Welschriesling and in the vineyard we work organically.

The idea of the name of the wine came during one of the annual operations in the vineyard, where a graceful and elegant plant stand out of the high gras. The wild carrot is a native wild plant, which grows beside roads, on flower fields and in the vineyards. The leaves, flowers and roots are healing herbs.

The harvest of the grapes was in the middle of September and one part of the grapes ran through a carbonic maceration and the other part fermented on the skins for 2 weeks. The wine was aged in small used oak barrels  and it was bottled without filtration with just a little amount of sulphur.

We are proud to be part and to monitor the stand-alone project since the beginning and are curious of the following vintages of the Wilde Karotte.
